Presidential Words and Methodology

Donald Trump Jul 26, 2017

President Trump, today, stated on Twitter that the US Armed Forced would not “accept or allow” transgendered persons (NYT). That generated a lot of media buzz. As of the time of writing this post CNN has at least 8 stories about it on their homepage.

Those were words. So far we have no knowledge that there’s any actual plan in place to even implement the words.

From the (plurality foreign owned) New York Times:

Mr. Trump announced the decision with such haste that the White House could not answer basic inquiries about how it would be carried out, including what would happen to openly transgender people now serving on active duty; of eight defense officials interviewed, none could say.

“That’s something that the Department of Defense and the White House will have to work together as implementation takes place and is done so lawfully,” Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the White House press secretary, said.

President Trump sent some tweets. They dominated the news cycle. But, why?

I don’t think they’re just a diversion tactic. But, President Trump has shown that he can completely dominate the media. He can’t control how they cover his Presidency but he can control what they cover. This effectively leaves him free to do whatever he needs to do whilst the media is chasing the latest quote.
